The
First Latin American Congress of
Clinical Research.
November, 2001
The Drug Information Association (DIA) and the Mexican Institute of
Clinical Research (IMIC) invite all members of the medical and
clinical research communities to THE FIRST LATIN-AMERICAN CONGRESS
OF CLINICAL RESEARCH, to be held on February 27th through March 1,
2002 in Mexico City’s Hotel Presidente Inter Continental.
The activities include a pre-Congress course, which will cover the
most important aspects of organizing and conducting clinical trials
in compliance with ICH and GCP guidelines and regulations.
The Congress is designed to offer all the information necessary for
the successful conduct of clinical trials in Latin America,
providing detailed information on regulatory aspects and ethical
issues. The Congress will present a prospective overview of the
participation of Latin America in global clinical research.
THE FIRST LATIN-AMERICAN CONGRESS OF CLINICAL RESEARCH is a must for
all who participate in any stage of clinical research.

An Update on
Clinical Research at IMIC
August 2001
The growth of Mexican SMO, (IMIC) Instituto Mexicano de
Investigación Clínica has been steady. The first private research
organization located in Mexico City, has established numerous
academic and research affiliations with prestigious universities and
hospitals. IMIC is currently negotiating an agreement with the
largest and most important Pediatric Hospital in Mexico City to
establish and manage a new Research Center within the hospital. IMIC
is also developing a new Phase I site in collaboration with the most
prominent private medical school in Mexico.
IMIC is currently conducting 30 clinical trials for sixteen
sponsors, in areas that include CNS, Respiratory Allergies,
Nutrition, Osteoarthritis, Diabetes, Ophthalmology, Skin infections,
G-I, Respiratory Infections, Cancer, Vaccines and HIV/AIDS.
IMIC's research personnel include eleven full-time study
coordinators well trained in GCP and ICH. It also has fifty
specialists in its Investigator database, all experienced and with a
large pre-screened patient base. IMIC patient database includes over
three thousand patients and covers a wide spectrum of common and
uncommon ailments.
The Quality Assurance department of IMIC is fully integrated. Recent
USA audits confirm the quality standards of clinical research at
IMIC.

IMIC is profiled in CenterWatch Weekly as Dr. Chiprut interviewed on
IMIC's progress. Many questions are answered such as:
- How did the institute
get started?
- How do you work with the patient population?
- How do you recruit patients?
- How do you pursue new leads from sponsors?
- Have you had to overcome any biases regarding working in Mexico?

New SMO Opens in Mexico
City
June 2000
The Mexican Institute of Clinical Research (IMIC) opened its doors
in Mexico City on March 1, 2000 with the intention of conducting
high quality clinical research in Mexico. Mexico’s population is
almost 96 million, 21 million of whom live in Mexico City. IMIC
plans to have five sites alone in Mexico City and another five in
other populations centers in Mexico. IMIC is directed by Dr. David
Ginsberg, CEO, and Dr. Roberto Chiprut, President.
Dr. Ginsberg cites three primary reasons for the formation of IMIC .
The fact that there is a very large population base in Mexico and
throughout Latin America: that 12% of global drugs are marketed in
Latin America and would be best served by a population in which the
drugs are tested; and the FDA-driven emphasis on testing drugs in
people that mimic populations-not just male Caucasians. “Generally,
we believe that well-run clinical research in Latin America will
succeed”, said Dr. Ginsberg. “ Our intention is not to build ( a
center) as good as one in the United States, but a better center”.
IMIC consists of
experienced, bilingual, full-time investigators and coordinators.
All of them are trained at active research centers in the United
States. This training includes a review of GCP's. All employees
participate in ongoing internal and external education programs.
IMIC also has its own IRB and import/export license, as well as
established relationships with the Ministries of Health. All of
these factors are what Dr. Ginsberg and Dr. Chiprut have established
as fundamental to running trials in Latin America.
